The most livable city in America for veterans is Irvine, Calif., while Detroit holds the bottom position out of the nation’s 100 most populous cities, according to an analysis published for Veterans Day by the financial web site WalletHub.
Three Texas cities were in the top 10 places to live for the country’s 21 million veterans: El Paso (6), Austin (9) and Lubbock (10). Two Florida cities, Miami and its suburb Hialeah, were at the bottom of the heap at 96 and 98, respectively.
The analysis compiled 18 metrics relevant to the lives of veterans, which fell into the two broad categories of “Economic Wellness” and “Environment, Education and Health.”
The first category included data on percentage of military skill-related jobs, rate of veteran income growth and housing availability, among other factors.
The second category included data on matters such as number of VA facilities available, crime rate, weather and recreation.
Cities in the Upper Midwest rated particularly high in the micro-category of highest percentage of military skill-related jobs, with St. Paul, Minn., and Madison and Milwaukee in Wisconsin placing in the top five. Las Vegas was rated dead last for such jobs.
Three California cities – Irvine, Santa Ana, and Bakersfield – were among the top five cities with the lowest veteran unemployment rate. Three Virginia cities – Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake – were at the very bottom of the list.
The veteran unemployment rate is 31 times higher in Virginia Beach than Irvine, the report said.
